A gang of teens have to fight off an alien
invasion, the police and drug dealers in order to defend their block. After
mugging ‘Sam’ (Jodie Wittaker) the gang are distracted by something falling
onto a nearby car – an alien. ‘Moses’
(John Boyega) brutally kills the alien. After the police catch Moses more
aliens arrive, this time they are more hostile, Killing the two police
officers. Moses and Sam escape and Sam seeks protection from the gang and
together they have to defend the block.
Written and Directed by comedian Joe
Cornish, I think that for Cornish’s debut film, it is very impressive. It’s the
perfect mix of interesting sci-fi, witty comedy and light horror – very much
like Nick Frosts’ and Simon Pegg’s Hot-fuzz/Shaun of the Dead.
A very well written movie. It has just the
right amount of comedy, fitting in perfectly with the whole film.
I think that John Boyega’s acting throughout was impressive for a young actor. He
plays ‘Moses’ a strong character who is clearly more mature than the others so
he’s the obvious the leader of the gang.
The other members of the
gang ‘Pest’, ’Jerome’, ‘Tonks’ and ‘Dennis’ were all individual
and very well portrayed. The other characters like the drugged up ‘Brewis’ (Luke Tredaway) and innocent and sensible ‘Sam’
added more diversity to the group and made the plot more interesting. Also the
drug dealer ‘Ron’ played by Nick Frost.
The conflict between ‘Sam’ and the gang
kept your attention throughout as it made you wonder where they were going to
end up.
It’s a very British film. It’s all filmed
in London and shows a typical block of flats that are seen in most British
cities.
Attack the block was a low budgeted film as
shown by the aliens. The Aliens are covered in black fur and their teeth glow.
The aliens are mostly costumed with some computer effects in editing. We rarely
see the whole of the aliens body so less money would have been spent on the
editing. But the acting, comedy and plot make up for the sometimes poor effects.
I think that Attack the block was a good
film overall and I would recommend it and see it again.
